Corporate games and its origin!

The origin of corporate games is a long story and many of us don't have a clue about what it is! But this event that is ideal for people of any age and ability to participate in sports together on a worldwide basis requires to be known to every individual and has its own importance. The main idea of the World Corporate Games was conceived by Dr Maureen Johnston who is known to be the Founder of the World Masters Games. It developed in 1985 wherein the major concept behind this act was to bring every business, institutions, organisations and societies of every kind and size together to participate and represent a team and be part of a multisport festival.

With this in mind, the first World Corporate Games was held in 1988 and was a great success. The 5th World Corporate games was known to be the most successful event and was held in London in 1992 where almost 6000 individuals participated in the event. Permission to stage the games outside the world events was allowed in 1991 and so the 1st Australian Corporate Games took its form in Sydney in 1993.

With the start of the Corporate games, one city after the other came into action, making this event a truly global movement with everyday athletes getting prepared in their business field through their participation in sport for a lifetime of achievements.

A Game of Team Work That Makes An Ideal Corporate

In a corporate, the most important thing needed for the company to run successful is its team work. This game enables players who work closely together to address factors influencing their effectiveness as a team.

The following game is to tell your team what you feel about the company and work. This is nothing but to say things light-heartedly. Tell the group what aspects of your contribution to the team you struggle with most. To take on little serious is, tell the group how you feel about the way decisions are made in the team. An in-depth analysis can be made on is tell the group how you feel about the way the team is being measured to determine its degree of success and failure.

Now, the following things are to ask your group in it's manner. 1. Ask the group members what they think you have taught or can teach them.
2. Ask the group  members what they think would happen if you left the team.
3. Ask the group  members how well they think you satisfy your immediate customers (inside and outside the team).

Now, this is not something that is purely entertaining. But, these are matters that will help you establish as a team bond together in mutual understanding.

Team Building and Knockout Games

Today's modern business world is more competitive. The same competition is faced in building a team and good staff morale. If your company wants to lead the pack, without a skilled and coherent workforce your team will not perform. And, team building is presumed to be the most expensive in terms of your training budget. There’s no doubt that without it could be very costly, indeed loss in sales and poor performance. You should have dedicated staffs and customers to have a top performing team.

There’s always a funny way to get your staff cogs turning like a well oiled machine and it’s called "It’s a Knockout". It’s a team game after all. “It’s a Knockout” Team Building is totally a different but a funny approach to the problem.

Your fellow mates will want to take part because it will not sound like formal team-building also they will be delightful in getting out on location and out of the stuffy office or shop-floor.

Well, you can have many teams in "Its A Knockout" and to make it interesting you could try managers v staff, departmental ‘wars’, boys v girls, etc. It all needs to be a friendly rivalry – but with that message that competitiveness is part of the corporate world but it can be great fun too!

Corporate Games- Good for Business!

Arranging games and having fun in a strict corporate environment will do good to the business environment. A business is always full of worries, hopes, about achieving targets, meeting clients expectations etc .So, arranging a tension-free corporate games session once in a month or two months, will do good for your business and for your employees to ease them off the pressures.

Now-a-days gaming is on the rise in corporate environments, and games are also becoming a popular tool for advertising. Some corporate firms in the UK even gift their employees with gift vouchers to dine in some restaurants (example, The Cinnamon Club Restaurant London). Apart from giving appraisals, these kinds of things also do a good deal for your company. The advantage is your employees will cling on to you even in your bad times.

Direct Marketing, what the future holds

Corporate firms and games are like marketing and sales, always coordinated and making headway. And it is the want of the companies that is taking their resources seriously.  It makes greater impact when both this factor are mixed together to act to keep the business vibrant. It opens new economic front.

But the fact remain that marketing is all about better planning and management, it not something to do with force dumping, which is temporary. To know the pulse of the customer and market, and then act accordingly to the demand is all that organized companies do, for example Appco Group.

Bristol Company Celebrates Banksy

A Bristol-based events company was stuck with creative ideas for a day out and (that dreaded phrase) ‘bonding exercise’. They took inspiration from one of the City’s best-loved artists.

The sentence ‘we’re going on a work day out’ can strike fear into the heart of the bravest soul. We’ve all spent a day ‘team-building’ (wearing the same t-shirt), ‘bonding’ (being shot at by a sociopath with a paintball gun), and ‘thinking outside the box’ (staring at four beige walls looking forward to free cookies). The Bristol HQ of international business events company GDS International employs around 150 people in a variety of connected-but-different roles: design, credit control, sales, video, IT, etc.

Corporate games are all about team building

Corporate games not only provide leisure to the employees, their families and the clients of the organization but also play an important role in team building. Games, exercises and activities help build teams, develop employee motivation and enhance communications. Team building games, exercises and activities can also enhance business projects, giving specific business outputs and organizational benefits.  Teamwork is fostered by respecting and  encouraging the team members.
Some of the useful tips in team building includes the following:-

  • Proper planning and a trial run of the team building exercise will help you to check that it works and to make sure that you have all the answers.
  • The instructions of the games should be complete and clear to have a proper control over the games and to ensure credibility.
  • Always have spare materials and equipments to accommodate more participants and  to cater to emergencies like breakages.
  • Take extra care while organising team building activities for kids and make sure that only simple and safe games are included.
  • Planning a theme for the team-building activities will make them more interesting and memorable.
Last but not least, you can use your imagination to simplify, shorten or lengthen the game format to suit your time and to make the exercise more interesting. Choose the corporate game format in such a way that it enhances the team spirit to make sure that the games achieve their objective.

Spencer Green GDS International: Staying afloat at all times

Spencer Green GDS International knows how to keep afloat at all times, even when it's all too tempestuous, as it's at present for most businesses.
The economic crisis that had struck a couple of years ago still continues to affect businesses. But Spencer Green, who believes in seeing the positive side of things, believes that it could do good to entrepreneurs provided they take the right step. Says he, “Finding success in business, as with all other areas of life, is often about finding the silver linings. The current economic climate is one hell of a cloud, but that does mean it is raining talent. In difficult times, companies get the pick of talented individuals; people that are hungry to get the right position AND make it stick. That sounds like opportunity to me.” Adds he, “To really capitalise on that opportunity you need three things: 1) Products that count and make a difference, 2) A clear strategy and to execute on that strategy, and 3) Momentum”.
A dedicated team is what the real strength for GDS International is. Spencer Green states, “In the last two years, my company, GDS International, has grown 78 per cent and our HR Directors have played, and continue to play, a massive role in that. In any tough environment there will be winners – and if that sounds smug, it’s certainly not meant to. I am enormously grateful for and proud of the hard work, long hours, selfless suggestion and team understanding that led to our growth”.
Spencer Green GDS thus makes the most of all resources available at all times and hence goes great, irrespective of crises and critical situations.

Corporate Game Ideas- Wine Olympics!

If you have easy access to a winery, then this game is to be held in a winery. This is the perfect team building event for you. This fun and wacky series of games are done on a flat, grassy field. The objective is for each team to get as much “grape juice” to make wine as possible. Of course, you can use water.

This event gets teams out on the lawn and doing some fun and entertainingly hilarious things:

1.      Giant Grape Rolling.  The “juice” is in four large purple balloons. Each team needs to form a circle around their four giant grapes—but face to the outside of the circle and link elbows. They use their feet to nudge and roll their balloons across the field, around a cone and back—without breaking any of them. Seriously silly and fun.

2.      Grape Conveyor- Each team spreads out across the field in pairs. Between each pair a towel is held. The first team of two picks up a grape balloon and catapults it with their towel to the second tandem, who must catch it in their towel, before flinging it to the next couple in the team line. The object is to get all the grape balloons down to the end team bucket.

3.      Grape Stomping (using small purple water balloons in buckets). Difficult to break, but gives the same squishy feel. Each person on the team takes turns stomping – to try and break the balloons. In the end, all liquid is separated from the “skins” and saved in the team’s “wine bucket.’

4.      The Wine Line
— a series of PVC pipes and connectors need to be put together in order to channel water through it in the fastest time possible. Some of the pipes have holes in them, causing leaks—which can be plugged by fingers strategically placed. Team are allowed to test their structures before the actual race takes place.

After this entertaining series, each team designs its own wine label. There would be points associated with the games as well as creating the best label, etc. The total points determine the winning team.

GDS International: 18th year of successful operations

GDS International, the privately owned  business-to-business events and media company run by Spencer Green, is now on to its 18th year.

GDS was launched as a publishing firm in 1993 by Spencer Green,  an alumnus of  Kings College, London and a former  member of The Rolling Stones’ road crew and also a former Sales Manager at Sterling Publications. The company became an events and media company in 1998 and launched its first conference, Enterprise China. The immensely successful Enterprise series was then rolled out across China and Latin America in the next two years and by the turn of the millennium, GDS International was going great. The company went on to become specialists in industry-centric summits for senior decision makers. From there it grew and in 2010, the  recorded revenue for the company from its offices in Bristol and Cardiff (UK), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia),New York (U.S.A.) and Sydney (Australia) was £40 million.

The 41 year old Spencer Green has this to say, “Just over 17 years ago I founded GDS International to explore the opportunities offered by a newly ‘open’ China. That company has changed. We’ve grown in numbers, products and – most importantly – skills…the company currently employs over 450 very talented, hard-working people. Those people grew the company by 40% last year, taking our annual turnover to around $63 million – a long way from the six friends and $50,000 that started day one.”

So now, as GDS International is moving towards completing two decades of operations, it's newer avenues and greater heights that's aimed at, as has always been the tradition with the company.
